Valve confirms Steam for Mac, debuts in April

Eager gamers have no doubt already seen the teasers, but Valve has now finally confirmed that its Steam game distribution service and Source engine will at long last be headed to the Mac. According to Valve, the company’s current line-up of games (including the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series) will be available to Mac users in April, while Portal 2 will represent the company’s first simultaneous release for PC and Mac later this year. Better still, Steamworks for Mac also boasts a new feature called “Steam Play,” which will let you buy a game once and, for instance, start playing it on a PC at work and then pick up where you left off on your Mac at home (we’ll give you a moment to let that sink in). Game publishers will have to enable that feature themselves, but Valve says it expects most to take advantage of it. Steam Comes to Mac, Offers Cross-Platform Gaming Free of Charge [Steam]

It’s official, Valve’s digital distribution service Steam is coming to Mac, and bringing Left 4 Dead 2 , Team Fortress 2 , Counter-Strike , Portal , and the Half-Life series (along with Source) with it this April. But there’s more. Apparently, through Steam Play, gamers will be able to play supported titles (anything built on Source, it seems) on a PC (say, at work) then continue the game from the same point on their Mac (say, at home). Both versions of these games come bundled in one price—which is completely, totally, unbelievably forward-thinking and awesome. Portal 2 Confirmed for Mac [Steam]

If Matt had to change his pants over the Valve Apple teasers the other day, what will today’s wardrobe malfunction be? I only ask because the latest GameInformer confirms Portal 2 is coming to Mac. Scheduled for a fall release, Portal 2 will be a full-fledged Portal experience distributed to the Mac, presumably, by an all-but-confirmed Steam service for that platform. [ MacRumors ]

Steam Is Most Probably Coming to Macs [Unconfirmed]

If you’re a Mac user, you may not know about Steam. By Valve (makers of Half-Life and L4D) it’s the greatest game distribution service in existence—like an iTunes for PC games. Now, it could be coming to Macs. In Steam’s latest beta release, a search through its files revealed a number of OSX-specific assets, like a Steam dock icon (among loads of others). Since there’s no reason for OSX resources—that I should add, are specifically labeled “OSX”—to make their way into a PC product, it seems pretty certain that, yes, Steam is coming to Mac

Fatman’s Wi-Tube Valve Amplifier Streams Audio Wirelessly To The FatDock [Audio]

There’s a new power couple in town—Fatman’s Wi-Tube and FatDock. The Wi-Tube valve amplifier can stream music wirelessly from a docked iPod or by the multitude of outputs the FatDock also offers. If you happen to invite a non-Apple-eating friend over for a long night in listening to Roxette’s back catalog, you can connect a media player or other source by the 3.5mm input, alternatively most iPod and iPhone models will do the trick. It not only charges any ‘pod that’s stuck in it, but can also sync up to a Mac or PC by USB. The Wi-Tube amp has two RCA inputs and one 3.5mm jack, and the FatDock can output wirelessly, or by RCA, USB, Video or S-Video—controllable with the bundled remote control. On sale in April for our UK friends for £399, it’ll retail for $599 in the States when it hits stores late April/early May.
