FCC submits National Broadband Plan to Congress: at least 100M US homes with access to 100Mbps download speeds

Right on schedule, the FCC has submitted its National Broadband Plan. There’s a lot to go through — note the calls for broadband benchmarking and pricing reports — and we’re still combing, but here’s what we’ve noticed so far. The six goals set out for “the next decade” propose that every American have the affordable access (the key, oft-repeated phrase) to “robust broadband services,” and, more specifically, at least 100 million US homes with affordable access to at least 100MBps down / 50Mbps up speeds. All communities should have at their disposal 1Gbps service, every first responder should have “access to a nationwide, wireless interoperable broadband public safety network,” and here’s an interesting one: every citizen should be able to use broadband to “track and manage real-time [home] energy consumption .” The appeal to our taxpaying wallets comes in the form of the FCC expecting the “vast majority of recommendations [to] not require new government funding”, and that the 500MHz of spectrum going on auction is “likely to offset the potential costs.” The plan, as the paper itself says, is in beta and be perennially in flux.

FCC seeks faster internet for America, more spectrum for wireless data

FCC seeks faster internet for America, more spectrum for wireless data

Leave it to Google to make even the FCC ’s ambitions look meager. But hey, for the vast majority of Americans who will never have access to an ISP with 1Gbps , we’ve got nothing but kudos to send to Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski. As the story goes, the FCC has unveiled a plan this week that would “require” internet service providers to offer “minimum home connection speeds by 2020,” with a delectable 100Mbps figure being throw around. Currently, US internet speeds average just under 4Mbps, and the nation as a whole ranks 19th in the world. Naturally, companies that provide internet are balking at the idea, suggesting that consumers would revolt if they were forced to pick up the tab for all the network improvement efforts that would have to take place. Of course, Cisco Systems now appears to be the FCC’s best bud, but we’re guessing we don’t have to explain the logic behind that one.

HTC HD2 gets a spec boost for the US

Looks like the HTC HD2 is getting a little spec bump on its way to our fair shores: the official spec page lists the version bound for T-Mobile US with 1GB of ROM and 576 of RAM, a boost over the international edition’s 512 and 448MB. What’s more, it looks like a bigger 16GB microSD card will come in the box, a big jump over the 2GB stick currently bundled overseas. Not a bad little upgrade — dare we hope that it presages a much bigger bump to Windows Mobile 7 before the scheduled spring launch? The US is Giving Digitalization 112 Percent [Charts]

If you were ever curious to know how fast our lives are becoming saturated with digital technology, get a load of this graph. In 2004 we were in the kiddie pool and by 2007 we were drowning. Citing the Census Bureau’s recent Statistical Abstract of the United States, Fast Company notes that an estimated 110 billion text messages were sent on cellphones in December 2008—more than double the previous year. Retail sales also soared from $24 billion when the decade began to $128 billion in 2007. So where are we now? It’s probably safe to assume that the Cracken has dragged our lifeless corpse to Davy Jones’ locker.

ComScore: iPhone overtakes Windows Mobile use for the first time in US

There are plenty of ways to measure smartphone marketshare. IDC measures units shipped from manufacturers whereas Gartner measures units sold to consumers. Then there’s comScore, the research firm that conducts monthly surveys in the US to measure the total number of devices (and thus operating systems) currently in use. Its latest data is summarized above for the three-month period ending in October. See those yellow lines? If our kindergarten skills haven’t failed us, then this data shows iPhone usage surpassing the once mighty Windows Mobile OS for the very first time.

Toyota’s plug-in Prius hybrid goes into testing across the globe, on sale in 2011

Good news, everyone! The target date for Toyota’s Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is slightly less out of reach than the 2012 window we heard prior: according to Autoblog , it’s now set for late 2011 and the price is deemed “affordable.” Back to the present, as a tease to the world at large, the company’s planning to produce and ship just under 600 of the models over the next six months. That breaks down to around 230 for Japan, 200 for Europe, and just 150 for the ‘States. Government agencies, corporations, and universities are the primary recipients, and interestingly, half of those Euro-bound cars are going straight to Strasbourg, France. The only catch is that it looks like the autos will be sticking with its flashy, hyper-blue paint job — not that we mind one bit, but we can see that bugging a few people out. Nintendo bringing pink and blue Wiimotes to America on Valentine’s Day

Hey, kids. We got your attention? Good. Remember those pink and blue Wii controllers that were quietly launched in the Land of the Rising Sun back in October? Yeah, well it seems that both of those gems are coming to the United States, but it’ll be well after Christmas before you can get your hands on either (without a good importer, anyway). Starting on February 14, 2010, the blue and pink Wiimote will be on sale on US soil, and both devices will come bundled with Wii MotionPlus dongles.

Nintendo DSi XL coming to America in Q1 2010

Since Europe and Japan can’t have all the fun — unless, of course, it’s a black Nintendo Wii — the super-sized DSi XL is also due out in the US sometime in Q1 2010, according to a spokesperson speaking with Joystiq . Still no word on price, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it parallel the slight markup for the
