Just a tad ahead of schedules — perhaps as a macabre assurance this isn’t some April 1st joke — firmware 3.21 for the PS3 is now being seeded to anyone who tries to log onto the PlayStation Network. As far as we can tell, all the update seems to do is remove the “install other OS” option and kill access to anyone who does have another platform dual-booted. Just a friendly reminder, if you fall into that category, be sure to either backup your partition or wait for Geohot to find a workaround. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] PS3 firmware 3.21 is out: say goodbye to ‘install other OS’ originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 23:48:00 EST.
This Thursday PlayStation 3 owners who install a firmware update will find that the ability to run other operating systems—such as Linux— will be removed . Most people won’t even notice, but hacker Geohot is already working on a fix. More
This video shows the Wii streaming Netflix faster and prettier than the PS3 , but it’s not much faster, and the Wii can’t support HD. Compared to Netflix on the Xbox 360 , both implementations look downright pitiful. [ SuperPowerBros via MaxConsole ] More

Sony’s already kicked out some decent looking PC gaming headsets this month, and it’s now followed those up a new batch of ‘buds (and one set of over-the-ear headphones) that are “made for” for your iPod or iPhone. The earbuds come in the form of the DR-EX300iP, MDR-EX38iP, and MDR-E10iP, which pack either 9mm or 13mm Neodymium drivers, along with in-line controls, a built-in mic and, in the latter two cases, your choice of two different colors. They’re joined by the DR-V150iP headphones “tailor-made for DJs,” which pack the same in-line controls and mic, along with a 30mm ferrite driver that promises “deep bass and generous power handling.” Of the lot, only the MDR-EX38iP is available now (for $40), with the rest due out in May. Back in 2007, Sony’s CEO Jack Tretton was dismissive of what he thought was a childish new product: the Nintendo Wii. Thankfully, a wise, old owl is here to make Tretton eat—er, lick—his words. [ Penny Arcade ] More
As we get closer and closer to being run over by a wave of 3D televisions, Blu-ray players, and assorted peripherals, we can start to see more of the details of that oncoming rush. Most recently revealed is the battery life of Sony’s active shutter glasses. As we’ve reported before , Sony is diving face-first into 3D technology for the home and each face that wants to follow along will need a pair of $133 TDG-BR100 or TDG-BR50 glasses perched upon it. Both models will manage 100 hours of active viewing before running dry — less than half the 250 hours Panasonic is pledging for its peepers , but more than double the 40 hours for NVIDIA’s option. 100 hours sounds like a lot, sure, but coming hot on the heels of Nielsen’s 35 hours per week of television report, we’re thinking you’d better keep that recharger nearby.
Sony’s illustrious VAIO Z may have a so-called ” Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System ,” but NVIDIA’s Optimus it is not. Or is it . Notebook Review ’s own igorstef started digging deeper within the laptop’s switchable GPU setup, and lo and behold, it sure looks as if Optimus is underneath. He went through the painstaking process of installing a slew of new drivers and tweaking some code within select .inf files, and in the end he seemingly found a way to get Optimus drivers working on the new rig. Of course, the debate has been raging on for five pages now, and it still seems inconclusive as to what’s really going on behind the scenes.
