We already knew that Sony’s GPS-equipped HDR-XR520V camcorder (and the slightly lower-end HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V models) would start shipping in March , but you’d be rightly skeptical if you thought that meant it’d be arriving closer to the end of the month than the beginning. Sony looks to be bucking the usual trend, however, as the camcorder is now in stock at Amazon and selling for the not-so-discounted price of $1,499 (SonyStyle itself, meanwhile, lists the camcorder as shipping on March 8th). It seems like quantities may be a tad limited to start with, however, as Amazon lists only four left in stock as of this writing. A handful of sellers also appear to have the HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V available, which each pack 120GB of storage as opposed to the 240GB on the HDR-XR-520V. New 360 SKUs always seem to land on Target shelves a bit early , and the new Resident Evil 5 red Xbox 360 Elite limited edition is no exception — there it is, hanging out in Pembroke Pines, Florida. We don’t know if these are just out behind the counter or if the staff is just ignoring that DO NOT SELL BEFORE 3.13.09 sticker, but we’re certain some kind soul will let us know soon. I just saw Clint Eastwood ’s Gran Torino for the first time the other day. This DIY paintball turret would have made the ending… different. At 38 balls per second, this turret would have easily displaced any Asian street gang member who stood in Clint’s way, or on his lawn. As a DIY project, the same could be said of you and your lawn, should you choose to invest the time to build one. Careful though, the prototype you see here took two years to build. The RNSK “Bang! Bang!” iPhone app recreates the sound of several firearms using authentic Hollywood special effects, and will probably get you shot up for real. You even hold it like a real gun. OK, strike that. This app will get you shot for real. Kai Cherry, of RnSK Softronics, told Tomorrowland that each gun is “carefully crafted,” all the way down to the “specific look, realistic options, and unique animations” of the real world gun they’re based on. There’s even a safety to keep things responsible. It’s unofficially available now at the App Store (”official launch” is Monday), although we doubt it will be making an appearance in one of Apple’s trendy iPhone app ads anytime soon. An “O.G. version” complete with filed of serial number, I shit you not, is due out soon: Word is you can hold it sideways, because that looks cooler. [ Tomorrowland - Thanks, Michael! ]
MIT’s latest creation, a speedy solar car cheekily named Eleanor, can reach 90 mph (good for enticing lead-footed Americans) and is packed with tech that could outfit mainstream hybrids soon (good for everyone else). Eleanor, with her flying saucer-esque lines and solar panel skin, was constructed by students in MIT’s Solar Electric Vehicle Team. The cutting edge electric vehicle tech contained inside comes with an unsurprising $243,000 price tag. Later this month, the tri-wheeled electric vehicle will compete in the World Solar Challenge , a 2,000 mile, seven-day race across the Australian outback that’s as much about battery charging strategies as it is keeping the accelerator pinned to the floor. Related trivia: Even without ample sunlight charging the batteries, the car could go from Boston to New York City on a single charge at an average 55 mph. That’s not bad, and beats the hell out of taking a white knuckle ride on the Fung-Wah bus. [ Wired ]
