iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak demonstrated by MuscleNerd, now it really is magical (video)

You better believe it when notorious iPhone jailbreaker MuscleNerd — a well-respected member of the iPhone Dev-Team — declares root access on an iPad . According to this fella’s tweets, this new hack is a port of Comex’s “Spirit” jailbreak that exploits a bug found on both iPhone OS 3.1.3 and the iPad’s 3.2. No downloads are offered right at this moment, but it shouldn’t be long before we can throw in all sorts of wild apps and widgets as we wish. Video after the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Continue reading iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak demonstrated by MuscleNerd, now it really is magical (video) iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak demonstrated by MuscleNerd, now it really is magical (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 04 Apr 2010 13:38:00 EST

Modern Warfare 2 map update leaves Xbox Live in a world of hurt

We’ve held off as long as possible, but the tips just keep flooding in — Xbox Live has a problem, and evidently it’s a rather noticeable one. Word on the street has it that a new Modern Warfare 2 map update has made a number of Xbox Live features unusable, including online MW2 gameplay. We’re also hearing that the Xbox Live Marketplace is off-and-on, and even Microsoft admits that quite a few other things are acting quirky. The good news is that a fix is on the way, so we’d suggest grabbing that lunch you’ve been denying yourself and trying again later. Hey, aren’t you supposed to be working right now, anyway

NPD: Xbox 360 wins US sales war in a downbeat February

The cosmos must clearly have approved of Microsoft’s actions over this past month , as today we’re hearing the Xbox 360 broke out of its competitive sales funk to claim the title of “month’s best-selling console” … for the first time in two years. Redmond’s own Aaron Greenberg describes it as the best February in the console’s history, with 422,000 units sold outshining the consistently popular Wii (397,900) and the resurgent PS3 (360,100 consoles shifted, which was a 30 percent improvement year-on-year). In spite of the happy campers in Redmond and Tokyo, the overall numbers for the games industry were down 15 percent on 2009’s revenues, indicating our collective gaming appetite is starting to dry up.

Two PS3 Slim Models Glimpsed On FCC [Playstation]

Still mashing your thumbs on the original PS3, after the PS3 Slim failed to ignite your fire? Yeah, me too—but unfortunately Sony’s not going to give us love anytime soon, looking at these FCC documents. The two documents don’t detail any of the changes, though it looks like they’re physically similar to the current Slims available today. Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi are both ever-present, but as for the other components? Start revving your Photoshop’s engine to send some “leaks” spiraling onto the gadget blogs.

Sony slips two new PS3 Slim models through the FCC

Our favorite pseudonym company out there, Sand Dollar Enterprise , is back with a pair of new filings with the FCC pointing to a refresh of the PlayStation 3 Slim hardware. We don’t know specifically what has been overhauled inside, though the two new SKUs, CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B, mimic the coding scheme of the current hardware, which is CECH-2001A and B. The alphabetical differentiation relates to different hard drive sizes inside, with 120GB and 250GB options available today and likely to be replicated in the forthcoming consoles. Looking at the FCC’s radio testing, we find the same 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR transceivers as are in the current Slim , leading us to believe the changes are elsewhere or, as PS3 News suggests, maybe Sony has just found new manufacturers for the same chips and had to run them through the validation committee again. It’s just that the latter is far less exciting than the idea of Sony starting up an upgrades war with some tasty springtime spec bump.

Nintendo’s Miyamoto casually references new hardware, MotionPlus games

Do you think non-disclosure agreements apply if you’re one of the guys who built the company you represent? Probably not, as evidenced by Shigeru Miyamoto , who recently took the opportunity — while receiving an award, no less — to blab about forthcoming hardware and games based around the MotionPlus peripheral. There wasn’t much content to his mentions, beyond us now knowing that he’s actively engaged in the design of multiple games outside of the next Zelda iteration, but this is the firmest confirmation yet that the Wii is set for a Wiiplacement . Parsing this with earlier comments from Miyamoto-san would suggest the company will be looking to optimize its present formula (maybe with a touch of HD ?) rather than revolutionize what is already a wildly successful console. Until then, let’s just be happy that one of gaming’s patriarchs is still going strong and dropping crumbs of knowledge for us undeserving earthlings. Hori Real Arcade Pro Premium VLX has a name to match its size, price

Shoulder buttons? Never heard of ‘em. Give us all our buttons in a nice rainbow-shaped array and a big stick for our southpaw and leave us well enough alone. Hori, the company behind the most righteous Tekken 6 arcade controller , is back with a Street Fighter -inspired effort for the true enthusiasts out there. This new deck is a direct copy of the Sanwa arcade cabinets housing Street Fight IV , meaning you can finally take your epic fighting skills home without fearing the misshapen things other people call controllers

THQ CEO calls PS3 Motion Controller ‘Arc’ throughout investor call

Even after all this time Sony’s hand-held wand bent on bringing some of that interactive Wii game play to the PS3 still doesn’t have a name. Announced at E3 , Sony as recently as January 20th was still calling its PS3 Motion Controller, well, “Motion Controller” in its official communications with a footnote that the name was still tentative. Of course, we’ve heard whispers that it’ll be called Arc — and we’re not alone. THQ boss Brian Farrell has either been reading the same sites as us or (more likely) is privy to some inside information.
