In this case the burning sensation is “delicious,” not “first degree and could result in your death.” And apparently it really works too, although the advertised “time to awaken” period seems a bit too long for my taste. Effective over an area of 50 feet, the Wasabi alarm can typically wake people up within two-and-a-half minutes. Update : This is a non-traditional fire alarm, for the deaf community. With that in mind, this could certainly save lives.
When Bang and Olufsen tackles a new type of device, they do it in a very specific way: oddly, stylishly, and with reckless disregard for cost. Exhibit F: The $375 BeoTime, a flute-like, accelerometer-equipped wireless alarm clock. Tied to the broader range of Beo home theater product, the BeoTime is a bit minimalist, even by B&O’s standards—it’s basically a stylized aluminum stick. But, as I’m sure the salesmen will be eager to tell you, it does so much more than an aluminum stick! On top of telling time, it can wireless switch B&O audio and video products on and off with alarms or sleep timers. Menus are navigated with the large center button, the snooze switch is the device’s accelerometer, which triggers when the device is moved, and the alarm can be totally disabled by depressing the metal plunger protruding from the device’s end. Time, alarm time and alarm source info are displayed on a set of low-res panels.
The inventor of this head-pounding “alarm clock” is admittedly a bit quirky (”Hi Mom!” cliche, check!), but I’ll be damned if I don’t give him kudos for inventing the most violent, aggressive alarm clock I’ve ever seen. Sadly, the source site doesn’t allow embedding, so I’ve assembled a series of screen grabs to try and capture the raw violence I saw in the original video. The same video, coincidentally, you can catch in the accompanying link. [ TechEblog ]
Lance Armstrong received surgery to more quickly fix his collarbone, which was broken into 4 pieces during a bicycle race in Spain. I wonder if he knows that the metal from the screws can set off the metal detectors in airports sometimes. (I have a titanium rod in my left tibia and the left over screw shavings set off the alarms 50% of the time, especially in higher security airports. True, as confirmed by the hand wands during the manual pat down.) He’ll be back on a training bike in a few days, with his chances for the Tour in July still up in the air. Feel better, Lance
Some French designers have created an alarm clock that changes the alarm clock dynamic in an interesting new way. Now, instead of slamming down on the snooze button, you’ll get a handful of OJ. The design is pretty simple. You set the alarm, then you make you breakfast selections, and go to sleep. When you wake up, you’ll have some toast, water or juice at the ready
Well, after weeks of speculations and false alarms, it looks like T-Mobile’s officially saying the “Cupcake” Android update will hit the G1 sometime next month. That’s at least the word according to the T-Mo spokeperson Pocket-lint got hold of — who went out of his way to disclaim any connection with the upcoming launch of the HTC Magic. In any event, we’re hoping all this bake time has fixed some of those bugs and lag problems , but we’ll see in a few weeks.
